Roman Roads

The Romans built the first roads in Britain. They were built to help people sell their goods a long way from home.

All the streets in the towns were laid out in straight lines. Buildings were made from stones and bricks, many towns had running water. Roman shops were small and faced the street.

My Own Roman Research About Roads by Emma Heimes

The Romans were very clever at building roads. The Romans put stepping stones on the roads so when it rained, mud got on the roads but people didn't get their feet wet. The Roman Soldiers made the roads, they made at least 85,000 kilometres of road. The roads in the towns got busy, there were traffic jams, the roads were not safe. People were frightened to go out at night.

They marked out the road with sticks first. Then they cleared it of trees and bushes.

The streets were crowded. People threw rubbish in the streets so they were smelly. There were usually two main streets.
