The
Skeleton
Your skeleton is the body 's framework. It is made up of 206 bones which meet and link up at joints. The se joints allow the body to turn twist and bend. The bones hold the body up and give your body its shape. Your bones come in many different shapes and sizes depending on the jobs they have to do. The largest bone in your body is your thigh bone or femur and the smallest is a tiny bone in your ear called the stirrup. Some bones in your skeleton have special jobs they protect the soft parts of your body. The skull protects the brain and the backbone protects the nerves inside it and the ribcage protects the heart and lungs. All mammals have more or less the same number of bones in their bodies whatever the size. A mouse has just as many bones as an elephant.
