Cardiff EduNet

Cardiff Education Network for Learning

What is it?

Cardiff EduNet is the local delivery of the Cardiff Education ICT for Learning Strategy as part of the NGfL (National Grid for Learning). It will contribute to schools achieving the NGfL national targets by 2002 and support the raising of standards in school through enhanced teaching and learning using ICT

What are its core purposes?

To develop ICT as a core skill within the National Curriculum and as a Key skill

To support the raising of standards of achievement across the curriculum

The dissemination of best classroom and management practice across Cardiff LEA

To provide learners with the ability to interact with local and global information

To support the development of Learning Centres across the city for 'out of hours' learning

To enable the development of community & home links using schools and Learning Centres

To develop 'on-line' consultation mechanisms for schools and educational partners

To develop services for schools including the LEA Intranet and On-line conferencing

To be an active participant in the NGfL and VTC Cymru

To support development of ICT skills in the NOF ICT Training for Teachers programme

To encourage and support the processes of school improvement throughout Cardiff

When does this happen?

Cardiff EduNet is developing in four phases over the duration of the NGfL funding from 1998 - 2002 and involves the provision of hardware, software and networking technologies to 20 secondary schools, 107 primary, junior and infant schools, 6 special schools and xx nursery schools.

Who is involved?

Cardiff EduNet has developed as a result of partnerships between the LEA, schools, South Glamorgan TEC, Coleg Glan Hafren, Research Machines plc, BT, NTL, National Panasonic (Cardiff) and several local network cabling companies. Issues of 'best value', reliability and quality of service are paramount to Cardiff EduNet.

What technology is being used?

 ISDN2 line (School Internet Caller)

Dual port router serving curriculum and administration functions independently

Enhanced CAT5 network cabling (2 admin and 5 classroom terminals) + hubs

Initially RM Internet for Learning Service (4 user licence) and email services

RM SchoolShare networking plus one RM WindowBox PC

Access to the LEA Intranet and VPN (Virtual Private Network) & Tertiary Intranet

What support do schools get?

Technical support is provided by a dedicated, mobile NGfL technician, backed up by technical support staff at ACCE (Advisory Centre for Computers in Education). ACCE is an RM Connect and RM SchoolShare Centre.

Curriculum support is provided by CASE (Cardiff Advisory Service for Education) - the LEA Advisory team and ACCE (Advisory Centre for Computers in Education) - the LEA IT support team. Cardiff EduNet linked to resources for the NOF ICT Training for Teachers initiative
