and interests, building on previous achievements and discovering new areas of experience to explore and master. Our work is planned to encourage variety in development; there is not a single standard end-product. Thirdly, we expect every child to give full effort and commitment to everything that is undertaken and to aim for the highest possible achievement. Sir Francis Drake wrote “It is not the beginning of any great matter but the continuing of it until it be thoroughly finished that yields the true glory”. Fourthly, we value pupils’ own success in achieving goals which extend them and measure success against the best previous performance of each pupil. In an all-ability school we know that the achievements of pupils will be varied; the attainment of excellence will mean different things for each pupil. Saint George’s is a Church of England School in which assemblies and Religious Education play an important part. The school as a community lives in the context of a belief in God in Christ, marked by care and concern for others. We seek to be a caring community. The home is the most significant influence on a child’s development. If parents take an active interest, provide a quiet place for homework and keep in touch with the school, they provide the support and encouragement that every growing child needs. Pupils join us at eleven when they are children. They leave as young adults. The relationship between the parents, the pupils and the teachers needs to be secure and strong if the tensions of growing independence are to be successfully negotiated. We see parents as partners with us in their children’s education and look for their active support and encouragement. By the time that pupils leave the school we hope to have enabled each to have developed the skills, the attitudes and the understanding necessary to participate in and to contribute to society, to have achieved the fullest possible success in public examinations and to have developed the flexibility to live a full life involved in and adapting to the changing needs and opportunities of society. A good school is continuously reviewing its work in the light of extension of human knowledge and in response to changing circumstances in the world. Founded in 1580 Saint George’s has had four centuries of change and adaption. This Web Site gives an account of the current curriculum and organisation of the school; it is certain that there will be changes during the school-life of every pupil. Do come and see the school at work, either by making an individual appointment or visiting during the Autumn Term when we hold a number of open events and tours. Sixth formers will be happy to show you around. Jean Bannister - Head Teacher |
