The ancient Greeks derived most of their knowledge of the sport
and art of wrestling from civilizations, such as Ancient Egypt,
that had advanced the art to a high degree over five thousand
years ago. The Greeks used wrestling in everyday life. For example,
it was not only part of a soldier's training, but part of a young
man's physical education. The Greeks viewed the art of wrestling
as a way to learn both grace and symmetry in a vigorous activity.
Wrestling was also a part of the program in such events as the
Olympics and many other festivals. After the conquering
of Greece by the Roman Empire, the Greek
form of wrestling evolved into what we now know today as Greco-Roman
Wrestling, one of the two styles in the Olympics today. The other
is Freestyle, which is closer to the ancient Greeks' style.
