Most people grew their own food, and meat was not eaten by many. It was mostly used for religious sacrifices. However, it could be purchased at the cook shops.
The poorer people of Athens were more accustomed to unleavened bread, porridge, and soup, while the wealthy consumed more frivolous foods such as figs, nuts and olives.
Due to the proficiency of the Greek's maritime skills, sea food was abundant. And what would seafood be without wine? Greek wine was usually watered down and came in metretes with a price tag of 5 drachmas. The Greeks believed that anyone who drank wine without water was on the road to alcoholism.
