GREEK CHARACTERS


There are so many Greek Mythology characters that it would take a lot of web pages to list and describe each one. I will run through a few of my favorites and if you want to see more

GODS

ZEUS: Is a powerful, dominating god. He had been saved by his mother from being swallowed at birth by his father Cronos who was a Titan. Zeus grew up safely and staged a rebellion. He released his brothers and sisters, defeated Cronos and took over as king of the gods. Zeus is associated with thunderbolts. He is all powerful and does what he wants with mortals

HERMES: Was the son of Zeus. He had a reputation for mischief. Zeus was amused by Hermes' energy and slyness, but Zeus could not allow Hermes to continue his exploits. He decided Hermes needed a task to keep him out of trouble. Hermes was then made the messenger of the gods and patron of travellers. Zeus gave him a winged helment and sandals so he could travel faster.

Aphrodite: Is a goddess of love. She has no formal duties but being lovely. She is irresistibly charming and is quite competitive about her beauty. She is usually accompanied by doves and sparrows.


CREATURES:

CYCLOPS: Is a giant, one eyed creature. Has enormous strength and is bad tempered. Polyphemus is one of the Cyclops known to have imprisoned Odysseus when he visited. Known to have given Zeus his thunderbolts.


SIRENS: Are beautiful female faces and voices that have bird-like bodies with wings and claws. They are known to have irresistible voices attractive to humans. They lure men and kill them if they get too close. Odysseus is one of the few who have actually heard their singing without dying by having himself tied to the mast.

SPHINX: Has a woman's head, lion's body, and wings. Can be found on the road to Thebes. Known to be evil. The Sphinx would challenge humans to answer her riddle and killed those who could not correctly answer. One day Oedipus was faced with the riddle and answered correctly. The Sphinx committed suicide in shame.



MORTALS:


OEDIPUS: Was abandoned as a baby to die because of an oracle predicting he would kill his father and marry his mother. He survived and was brought up in court at Corinth. As he grew up he faced his father without knowing who he was. The two got into a quarrel and Oedipus ended up killing him. Next Oedipus was given the throne and married Jocasta, who was his mother. The oracle was fullfilled. When Oedipus realized what he had done he blinded himself and became an outcast. He was intelligent and a good ruler but he was ill-fated.

NARCISSUS:Was concerned with his own beauty. He would hurt anyone who fell in love with him. He was punished by Artemis, a goddess, who made him fall in love with his own reflection. He committed suicide when he realized he would never love anyone better than himself.
