Poseidon God of the Oceans

Poseidon was a son of Cronus and Rhea. Instead of being swallowed at birth, some versions had Rhea replacing Poseidon with a foal, which Cronus swallowed. After the overthrow of his father Cronus, Poseidon became the god of the sea. He is often depicted with his weapon of choice which is the trident. Like Zeus, Poseidon interfered a lot with the affairs of mortal men.

Poseidon at first wished to marry Thetis, but he soon found out that a son from her would overthrow him, so he let Peleus a mortal marry her instead. He next went after Amphitrite. This caused her to flee to the Atlas Mountains. Poseidon then sent a dolphin named Delphinus to her. The dolphin's great charm convinced Amphitrite to return and marry Poseidon. For Delphinus' help, Poseidon made him into one of the constellations.

Poseidon was the father of Polyphemus the Cyclopes. Poseidon constantly hindered Odysseus' attempts to return home for tricking and injuring Polyphemus. When Achilles killed Cycnus, who was a son of Poseidon, Poseidon was instrumental in arranging the hero's death.

In contrast to the Sea God's temperamental emotions, Poseidon was said to have created useful things in the world. He created the horse. When he coupled with the Gorgon Medusa, the result was the birth of Pegasus, a winged horse, which aided Perseus in his tasks later on. He also created the zebra as a result of trying to perfect the horse.
