Archons

These were men (Women could not be archons) whose function was similar to that of our presidents today. They were elected annually by the Areopagus, or council of aristocrats. Archons were responsible for maintaining order in the community. They did this by various means. Most commonly it was through the supervision of religious rites. These rituals were considered to be very important, since they held the community together. Archons were also military commanders. Today our president also serves that function as Commander in Chief of the army.
