Plato felt that different types of music (the different modes and instruments) were capable of affecting the moral fiber of the
listener, either in a positive or a negative manner. In later music history,
certain scale modes and intervals were literally outlawed simply because of
their dissonance. Taking into account the attempts at music censorship
today, it would seem that music is still seen as a powerful source for morals shaping.
