The Lost City Of Atlantis

Welcome to the Lost City of Atlantis page. Most scholars now believe that the legendary city of Atlantis did in fact exist. Not as the mystical city with walls of gold and superhuman citizens, but as an ancient town, on the island of Thera, that was part of the civilization we call the Minoans. The island of Thera is formed by a volcano that juts from the Mediterranean sea. It still exists today, though transformed by many volcanic eruptions. It was one of these eruptions that destroyed an ancient city on the island of Thera in the Mediterranean that is believed to have been the origin of the myth of Atlantis.

The legend of Atlantis was first told to us by the Greek philosopher Plato. It is thought that he heard of it by way of an Egyptian priestess. Plato describes a wealthy city with golden walls, elaborate architecture, an invincible army and enlightened citizens that were more advanced than any of their time.
