MOUNTAINS
The mountains of Greece are said to be the most prominent feature of its topography.
They form almost seventy percent of the land area of Greece and seem higher than they are as
they rise directly out of the sea. Olympus (2,917 m.), Smolikas (2,637 m.), Voras (2,524 m.),
and Grammos (2,520 m.) are the tallest of the twenty eight mountains that exceed 2,000 meters
in Greece. Since these mountains have been shaped by weathering and erosion there are no
jagged peaks. The hills are characterized by horizontal and vertical lines and are more gentle and
rounded in form.
