TIMELINE

PREHISTORY

Evidence of Neolithic man in the area exists.

800 B.C.

Mt. Vesuvius becomes very active. The Oscans are living in the area. This area later becomes known as the Campania Region.

500 B.C.

The first Greeks begin dwelling in the Pompeii area along with the Oscans. The spoken language is Oscan.

400 B.C.

The Greeks and Sammnites (who are both living in the area) have a war. Oscans, Greeks, Sammnites, Etruscans and Romans are all living in the area (and still fighting among each other at times).

200 B.C.

The fighting slows down and Pompeii is becoming prosperous. The different groups are learning to blend together. Because of this, good things are happening. Roman influence begins to strengthen.

91 B.C.

The Roman language, Latin, becomes the spoken language in Pompeii.

89 B.C.

Pompeii is attacked by Sulla (a Roman leader) and it comes under his control.

59 A.D.

The Romans close the amphitheatre in Pompeii because of the riots between fans from Pompeii and a nearby town.

62 A.D.

A huge, violent earthquake strikes Pompeii and destroys much of the city (including the Forum) which does not get rebuilt.

79 A.D.

A violent volcanic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius covers Pompeii in about 10 feet of ash and kills many people.

1500 A.D.

Public workers discover the ancient city while digging.

1748 A.D.

Archaeological research which continues to the present day is begun at Pompeii.
