Running through the mountains are the plain basins. They
are found framed by hills in the high altitudes. You often find lakes, bogs,
and basins in these plains, but they rarely have any drainage to the exterior.
These areas are where farming would be most fruitful. But even in these areas
soil is very rocky and difficult to work with. Good clean water was also very
hard to come by. Drainage was very poor so terracing had to be done to allow
farmers to grow their crops on a hillside. Just keeping up the terraces was
hard work on its own. These plains are not very big to begin with, they could
only support one town. The town would be built on a flat area while on top of
a hill would be a temple built for the gods. This hilltop is called the Acropolis.
Only about one third of the land could be used for farming. Greece has also
very few economic resources.
