Hera Goddess of Prophecy
Spheres of Influence- Queen of the Gods
Protector of marriage and married women
Prophesy
Hera was the daughter of Cronus and Rhea and was born
in Argos or the island of Samos.. After being forced to couple with Zeus
Hera had no choice but to marry him. Their honeymoon was on the island
of Samos, and it lasted for three hundred years. Throughout mythology,
Hera is portrayed as the vindictive wife. She spent her time punishing
the mortals of whom her husband coupled with.
Out of all of Zeus' illegitimate children, Heracles annoyed
Hera the most. As soon as Zeus started bragging about how great his unborn
son will be, Hera tricked him into making promises for the next royal birth.
Hera slowed down Alcmena's labor and sped up Archippe's labors. This allowed
Eurysthesus to become High King instead of Heracles.
Fearing Hera's wrath, Alcmena abandoned her son. Hera
was then tricked by Zeus and Athene into suckling an orphan who turned
out to be Heracles. This is how he got his name and his immortality. As
soon as Hera realized who the baby was, she pulled her breasts away spilling
the milk; which formed the Milky Way.
Her dislike for Heracles continued as he performed his
labors. She rewarded the crab and Ladon who fought against Heracles by
making them constellations. Ironically when Heracles finally was officially
recognized as an immortal, Hera kept quite. Surprisingly she gave Heracles
her daughter Hebe to marry.
