Women never dressed without washing first. Wealthy women had servants who poured water over them. Poorer women still washed, but they did it themselves. After washing they put on a large rectangular piece of transparent linen with a central hole for the head. They gathered it at the chest and fastened it in a knot. Many women wore a basic form of make-up. They used powdered minerals and mixed them with oil, before painting them on their faces. Most of the powder was green, blue or black.
