The Kotah painters captured movements in animals, especially elephants, better than any other artists. They made their elephants look lively and showed bulk and strength. They thought about the huge energy of the animal.

The sketch is done with charcoal. The only finished part is the elephant's head, done in black and brown ink with white highlights. It is probably a sketch for a painting of two elephants fighting - the other one is not shown. Attendants, trying to put off the beast with firecrackers, run for cover as the mahout appears to have lost control.
