Snails and shellfish are molluscs that have shells. Snails are found in fresh and sea water, and some snails have also adapted to life on land.

Snails have a distinct head with a pair of tentacles that can go in and out of its body. An eye is located at the base of each tentacle. Under the tentacles is the mouth. Inside the mouth there is a tongue that acts like a saw. It shreds the snails' food. Snails eat mostly plants. Sometimes they eat dead animals. Fish and some birds eat snails.

Snails and slugs move by gliding along on a muscular "foot." This muscle leaves behind mucus, which later dries to form the silvery "slime trail".
