The Mount', as it is affectionately known, is one of New Zealand's most
popular beach resorts with a reputation for settled, hot summers.

It boasts excellent surfing, swimming and fishing off its splendid Ocean
Beach.

One of the region's most popular walks winds up and around The Mount itself
and offers rewarding views at almost every turn of the track.

Other popular activities at The Mount are joining in with the locals at low
tide on Ocean Beach digging for tua tua, a succulent shellfish, or a boat ride to
Moturiki Island to marvel at the spectacular blow-holes.

In 1769 Captain Cook sailed past Mt. Maunganui and noted that it was the
site of many Maori forts.

At 232 metres high it dominated the surrounding area and provided natural pa
sites which were witness to attacks, counter-attacks and betrayals on a
grand scale during the New Zealand wars of the 1860s.

Then, as it still does today, Mt Maunganui has great spiritual significance
to the Maori.

During later times the area settled down as a quite agricultural service
centre until improved transport revolutionised it.
