On the Sabbath, and at other Jewish festivals, the meal begins with blessings said over wine and two loaves of bread, which are then shared by everyone present. The challah (bread) is of a special kind, enriched by the addition of egg. Shabbat loaves are usually plaited and the loaves for other festivals round. It is important that there are two loaves because these represent the time when Jews lived in the wilderness having escaped from Egypt; God provided them with two portions of 'manna' on the day before Shabbat so that there would be no need to work on the day of rest.

A challah cover is used at the special meal on Friday evening when Jewish families gather to welcome Shabbat. It is used to cover the two loaves of bread which are placed on the table. Many challah covers bear the pictures of objects found on the Shabbat table, e.g. loaves of bread, candles, wine or flowers. Designs may also incorporate a Sabbath greeting in Hebrew.
