Jewish people live all over the world, but Israel holds a special meaning for many as the place from which their ancestors came, and as the place that many want to visit or live. The flag of the modern Jewish state of Israel is therefore an important symbol for many Jews. It may be seen at a number of Jewish celebrations such as Sukkot (hanging amongst the decorations in the Sukkah) and Simchat Torah (being waved by children in the procession of Torah Scrolls).

The blue stripes represent the stripes on a Jewish prayer shawl. In the middle of the flag is a Star of David (Magen David, or 'shield of David' in Hebrew), a blue six-pointed star.
