On Friday evenings the mother of a Jewish family lights the Sabbath candles, reciting the appropriate blessing. If no woman is present, someone else will light them. There must be at least two candles. These candles are also lit at the beginning of every other holy day, not just the Sabbath.

The candlesticks are often made of precious metal such as silver, and may be family heirlooms. They may be given to a girl on her Bar mitzvah as she looks forward to her responsibilities as a Jewish adult.

Where can I see Shabbat candlesticks in the synagogue?

Where can I see more Shabbat candlesicks?

What happens when the candles are lit?
