On the Sabbath the meal begins with blessings said over wine and two loaves of bread. The challah (bread) is special. As well as flour and water, it also has an egg. Shabbat loaves are usually plaited. There are always two challah loaves.

A challah cover  is used to cover the two loaves of bread. Many challah covers have pictures of objects found on the Shabbat table, such as loaves of bread, candles, wine or flowers. Designs may also have Hebrew writing.
