This photograph shows a single decker bus in the late 1940's. Buses at that time had the engine at the front and you got on the back so each bus had a driver and conductor. Each bus held 35 passengers and the route had to make enough money to pay the driver and conductors wages.

This chart compares the number of local buses running about 40 years ago (1952) with today.
