The  Tudors  used  this  chest  for  putting  spices  and  other  valuable  things  like  scrolls, money,  gold and  silver in. The  spices  they   keep are called Cinnamon and nutmeg. 

Chests,  sideboards and  stools  were  decorated  with carvings and were
so well made that a few still exist.

From the middle ages until around 1700, large chests for storage and seating, were the most common pieces of furniture in any household.
Before banks were established in the
Seventeenth century, chests had to serve as safes, reinforced with iron straps and locks.
