Drake set off from Plymouth harbour in December 1577. He was chosen by Queen Elizabeth to sail round the  word. Hr started his voyage on a ship called the Pelican along with four other boats. The pelican was eventually renamed the Golden Hind. Drakes voyage helped build a picture of the world .

Drake discovered that Tierra Del Fuego was a group of islands and not part of the southern continent as had been thought.  This meant that the pacific and Atlantic oceans met at Cape Horn and that in the future ships would be able to use this route.
