In 1601, Queen Elizabeth made a new law that each parish should look after poor. Poor Rates were collected from the richer people, and used for shelter, food, clothing and fuel.
The poor house in Framlingham Castle was made from the material of the buildings inside the castle walls. This same material was also used to build alms houses. The orphans, unemployed and ill were taken there if they had nowhere to go.
