In Tudor times punishment was especially bad because even if you were caught begging you would be hung by your hair to a frame and whipped. About the most common punishment was beheading. The victim would kneel down and place their head on the chopping block. Compared with being hung or burned at the steak beheading was not that bad. Beheading was a quick and painless death. Each crime would have a different punishment, the worse the crime the worse punishment.
