Victorian Census Returns
View this copy of an original page
The Victorians started the National Census in 1801. These have been every 10 years since (except for a few years during the last war) and aimed to count everybody living in the Country on census night. As the years progressed more and more detail was required to be collected for each census. These census returns provide a remarkable insight into Victorian society. The original entries are available to the public when they are 100 years old. Although the actual census returns for the first years were destroyed (1801 to 1831), the original entries by the enumerator survive for 1841 - 1891, and are available from the Public Record Office. Many local libraries have purchased copies of these original records. We have put the records for Halmer End village into a database so that searches can be carried out.
