2 - The Minnie Pit
There were many pits in the area. The colliery in the village was named after the daughter of the owner and is particularly remembered for the pit disaster just before the end of World War One.
Most families in the village were involved in the mine in some way and many lost a loved one in the disaster. The site of the mine is within walking distance of the school and has a small memorial
