Nantwich Road. The approach to Audley along the Nantwich road, once a tree lined country lane. On the right is the entrance to Wall Farm and to the left the half timbered Audley Hall. Today there are houses on either side of this road part of the ribbon development that often occurred on the edge of villages. About 1900 (img0008)

William White's Buildings, church Street Audley. Pevenser described these buildings as 'indeed something extraordinary'. The were shops and a small house in Victorian times and stood opposite the first Post Office in the village in Church Street. (img0013)

Church Street Audley about 1920. This area was re-developed about the turn of the century. The building on the corner was the new bank building (Ivy Covered Building), standing at the corner of Dean Hollow. You can just see the word BANK cut out in the stonework over the door. The bank at the time was the National Provincial Bank, later taken over by the Westminster bank to become part of the National Westminster Chain. The adverts on the railings announce the forthcoming attractions at the market hall. One was 'The Cheyennes's love for the Sioux' There are also adverts for Singer cycles. The shop behind the horse and cart was a Chemists, now demolished. (img0006)

Church Street Audley 1862. This is probably the oldest surviving photo of Audley, taken in 1862. Notice that the slow shutter speed has blurred the moving figures! The original Audley School is on the left by the church. (img0030). Other views of this area of Audley are:-

Bignal End Village from the top of Castle Hill, Audley. The road to the left was the old road to Nantwich (see img0037) which ran past the Wesleyan Chapel and the school, now Ravensmead School. The new road built to replace it is on the left. Ravensmead school started in a building adjacent to the chapel in 1811 and was opend by the Wesleyan Day School Society. It was taken over by Staffordshire County Council in 1909 and was re-named Raven's Lane Council School. (img0063)
