Open Sixth Form
Sir Wilfrid Martineau's open Sixth Form has a curriculum designed to offer maximum choice to students. We have a long-established tradition and record of success in all our A Level, BTEC, GCSE, Diploma of Vocational Studies, and GNVQ Courses. Our students have been very successful in gaining places at Universities and colleges, and in gaining employment in a wide range of jobs.
Our aim is to provide a relaxed, informal environment for our students, but we do insist that each student keeps to a contract freely entered into with the Sixth Form, regarding attendance, punctuality and effort. There is a comprehensive personal and social development programme in the Sixth Form, and each student is allocated a tutor who will be responsible for helping, advising and monitoring progress throughout the student's career. Careers advice and help with all applications is an important aspect of Sixth Form guidance. There is no uniform requirement, but we expect a tidy and presentable appearance. Similarly students have more freedom in organising their time and work, but this does involve a greater personal responsibility on their part. A Centre is provided for the Sixth Form for relaxation and studying, and a Sixth Form Council exists to raise issues and improve Sixth Form life within the school.
A wide range of opportunities is open to students as well as studying. Work experience is built into many students' programmes, and studying can follow a vocational programme in areas like Engineering, Catering, Information Technology, Recreation and Leisure, and Business Administration. Extra-curricular activities are an important part of the Sixth Form: ski-trips and foreign excursions, school musicals and productions, video productions, social evenings, theatre and cinema trips, debating clubs, and a wide range of sporting activities, all enrich the student's life.
