GCSE English
English is about communication. In the modern world more so than ever before, competence in speaking, reading and writing are vital for anyone who wants to enjoy a happy and successful life.
In years 10 and 11 students follow a course leading to GCSE in English. Some students also study English Literature. We try to make the course as interesting as possible. It includes writing of many kinds; letters, stories, instructions, leaflets, advertisements and arguments. It involves activities designed to extend competence in speech, drama, use of tape and video-recorders and the constructive use of television. It includes work on books which are studied outside of the classroom. Assessment in the English exam is part coursework (40%) and part final exam (60%). There is also an oral assessment based on work throughout the two year course.
The literature exam, which is taken by some students, is also part coursework (30%) and part exam (70%). This involves different genres: drama, poetry, novels, and prose. Some of the work used for the language folder can also be used for the literature folder.
English serves all other subjects, and is a subject in its own right. Nearly all employers expect a qualification in English, and al courses in further and higher education require one. Mastery of the English language is just as important for leisure as it is for work.
