GCSE Science


Science is now recognised as an essential part of the education of all students until they are sixteen. In years Ten and Eleven students follow a science course for four periods a week. The course builds upon the work previously done before in the subject . It will aim provide a balance of scientific knowledge and developing scientific practice. The course will provide a broad view of science which should help you to succeed in our increasingly scientific and technological society. Students study the essential elements of each of the traditional Science subjects - Biology, Chemistry and Physics taught by specialist teachers. The course is flexible enough to provide a worthwhile science education whatever your ability.

The course contents follows closely the programmes of study laid down in the National Cirruculum and leads to an examination which is equivalent to two GCSE subjects. It will provide a sound grounding for those who wish to continue their science education beyond the age of sixteen, or hope to have a career which involves science.

Practical work forms an important part of the course for all students. Practical skills are assessed and make up 25% of the final marks. These extended investigations involve work both in the Laboratory and at home.
