There are a wide range of Design and Technology courses available at Sir Wilfrid Martineau School.

Food

This course involves looking at various aspects of Food Technology, to include methods of production, nutritional needs of individuals and groups, and sensory evaluation.

Assessment is through a single written paper plus coursework.

The coursework consists of one project which is to design and make a quality Food Technology product. Much of the practical work is completed in lessons, but areas such as research have to be completed outside of school.

Textiles

This course looks at various aspects of Textile Technology including sewing, fashion, making and using fabrics and printing and dyeing.

Assessment is through one written paper plus coursework.

The coursework involves the design and production of a quality Textile Technology product.

Electronic Products

This course involves the combination of designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding in order to design and make quality electronics products.

The course is highly practical, making use of computers to help with the production of circuit diagrams and printed circuit boards.

Graphic Products

The course the use of graphics in communication and encourages you to use a wide range of techniques. Information technology used during the course includes computer-aided design and manufacture. During the course students study tools, equipment and drawing systems.

Resistant Materials Technology

The course aims to develop an overall understanding of design incorporating construction techniques and materials knowledge. Students on this course are expected to complete a majour piece of practical coursework demonstrating their practical skills. The coursework accounts for 60% of the final exam mark and includes a design folder which is worth half of the coursework marks.

Students are encouraged to work in wood, metal and plastic as well as developing a range of graphical communication skills.
