What is a Voluntary Aided School?
With the advent of Local Management, many of the particular
responsibilities associated with Voluntary Aided Schools have now
been devolved to Governors of all Schools. Voluntary Aided
Schools were originally provided by voluntary bodies (mainly the
Church of England or Roman Catholic Church) and have, as here at
St. Margaret's close, and important links with these bodies even
though the Local Education Authority (Suffolk County Council)
meets a lot of their running costs. The voluntary body owns the
site and buildings and appoints the seven foundation governors.
The Governors rather than the LEA employ the staff and they are
responsible for most building works and exterior repairs.
