The Big 3 Award Ceremony

Thursday April 13th 2000

The Morning Session with Class 2 | The Afternoon Session with Class 5

A Report on the big 3 books

On the 13th April 2000 a group of year 6s - Melissa, Rebecca, William and Danny - went to the council house for the Big 3 Award Ceremony, along with some other city schools.
Tony Mitton, (author of Fangtastic Raps), performed some of his raps and he was superb.

After Tony Mittons performance we went on a tour of the Council House. During this time other groups of children were working with authors, illustrators and creating their own raps on the Kids On The Net website.

We were told that the council house bell is called Little John.
Melissa and Rebecca sat on the Mayors chair in the Council Chamber and had a photograph taken.
After that we went into the Sheriffs room and Mr Widdowson was tricked into trying on the sheriffs outfit and he looked brilliant.
Outside the sheriffs room were lots of medals. The Mayors pendant costs £250,000 and with 22 diamonds in I should think so.
In the dining room there was a picture of the queen in her very pretty dress. It was painted by John Townsend.
After the tour we went to a workshop with Tony Mitton. We made a rap and he was great .The rap was called 'The Haunted House Rap'.

At the end of the session we all had a Poke'mon cake to take back to school.

The afternoon session was the awards ceremony.

Four children from class 5 - Kafeel, Chelsie, Matthew and Charlotte - attended.
The first awards were given out to the winning authors.

Hiawyn Oram won the award in the best book for 6-7 year olds with Just Dog

Jonathan Long won the award in the best book for 8-9 year olds with The Duck That Had No Luck

Tony Mitton won the award for the best book for 10-11 year olds with Fangtastic Raps

Bulwell St Mary's Primary School performed a version of The Duck That Had No Luck, then the children's prizes were awarded.
For the best review of a book in the competition, a pupil from Glapton Primary won lunch with the Mayor. There were also 6 runners up.
10 children, including Chelsie, won a book token prize in the book review prize draw (and one lucky child also found a family ticket to Alton Towers in their prize envelope)

The children were thrilled to have met the authors of their favourite books, although Kafeel was disappointed that Korky Paul (illustrator of The Duck That Had No Luck) could not attend.
