Memories of the Coronation and Jubilee

Union Flag by pupil

Mrs Duncan talks about the Coronation:

I was nine at the coronation. I lived in a mining village near Doncaster. The street where I lived was really festooned with decorations for a street party. I was in a fancy dress competition for the children, I was Brittania! We had no television, no one did who I knew. We saw the actual Coronation at the cinerma much later.

Mr Widdowson talks about the silver Jubilee:

I was 7 when the Queen celebrated her Silver Jubilee. My family went to a main road near to us to wave to the Queen as she drove by. We had a party (but not on the street, it was too busy), and at school we were given a special coin to remember. A local factory painted a huge Union Flag on its wall to celebrate the Jubilee.
