Southwold Greets the Queen as she opens the New University Campus

Read the reports from class 4

The new Nottingham University campus across the road from our school was officially opened today by the Queen.

All the children from Southwold went across and stood ready to wave to the Queen.

The children were present for several reasons;
  • The site of the University is built on the Original site of Southwold Primary School, before the school moved in 1968

  • Our Headteacher was invited to the official opening

  • The school has good links with the University, and has many students helping around the school

Before leaving school the children met in the hall for a quick reminder of what they would and would be allowed to do, then it was off to see the Queen !!

walking

The first guest we saw arrive was David Blunkett, minister for Education. He walked across the road and spoke to class 4.

As we waited in the bitter cold we also saw the Lord Mayor arrive. Although class 3 shouted to him, he did not come across - but class 3 did meet him in the council house the week before (see the Lord mayor Webpage)

Finally, amid a procession of police motorbikes, the Queen arrived in her burgandy Royal Limousine. She waved to all the children as the car drove slowly past, before arriving at entrance of the University.

arriving

Shortly after the Queen entered the building then the Duke of Edingburgh arrived seperately before joining the Queen inside.
