THE SPHINX

Long ago in Ancient Egypt there lived a King and his princess. Everything was very peaceful in their kingdom except for the terrible Sphinx.

The Sphinx was the only terrible thing in their lives. It came out hunting in the night for food. It was so frightening that nobody could sleep at all.

One morning the Sphinx came out unexpectedly to hunt for some more food. The people thought that the Sphinx only came out at night but there was something wrong with it. The Sphinx had turned very nasty. He had never been so horrible before.

He was heading towards the home of the king and princess. The Sphinx stood outside of the Kings home and shouted "Give me your princess". The King was Frightened of the Sphinx. He couldn't say no to it because it would eat him so he sent the princess down to the Sphinx.

The King was so upset he couldn’t live without his daughter. He went outside to find his daughter.

Meanwhile the princess was sat down waiting to see if her father would come and rescue her. The Sphinx was just about to take a bite when the King stepped in.

The Sphinx shouted "How dare you interrupt my feast. How dare you".

"I want my daughter back" said the King, "I will give you a comforting place to live but please give my daughter back".

But the Sphinx said no and ate him all up then he turned to the princess.

He said "I have to eat you, that’s what I came for", so he swallowed her in one big mouthful. After his meal he went to find the Kings old home and settled down. That was his home from then on.

The following morning the people of the kingdom saw the Sphinx living in the Kings home the people decided to put a curse onto the Sphinx and that’s what they did. There the Sphinx stood still, turned into stone forever more.

And it can still be seen today.
