A word from the Editor

Welcome back to a new term at Southwold.
This issue sees a major change, in that the reporters of the first two issues have now left us, and a new group of budding journalists have taken over the reins of the newspaper.
We hope that you will still enjoy the Southwold School Newspaper.

Summer Celebrations

Well, what a summer we had at Southwold !! Thirty years of school here and what a week of partying we had.
Our party week began with a treat for the football mad children, (and teachers), with the whole school being invited to watch the England Vs Tunisia match at the start of the World Cup. The children were able to have their faces painted with the flag of St. George before the match, and Mr. Widdowson appeared wearing his England wig.
The match was enjoyed by all, especially when we scored the goals that let us win.
On Tuesday we had two special events, as the juniors went to the Nottingham Tennis Centre to watch a few matches in the Nottingham Open Tennis Championship, and the infants had their own tennis tournament outside on the school field.
At the tennis centre the children had to take a snack with them. They had a warm up before practising bouncing the ball. It was good.
Wednesday was a fancy dress day with a theme of Spots and Stripes. Lots of children made really good efforts to find their spottiest or stripiest clothes, and Joshua and Aaron looked wonderful as two circus clowns. The teachers also joined in the fun and dressed as a road crossing (Miss Preston-McCauley), a domino, and a dice (Mr. Widdowson).
Thursday afternoon we had a disco in the school hall and had a great time dancing to all the music that was played.
On the last day of the week we had the best time of all. We had a very special party outside on the school field. All week long we had been making triangle flags and these decorated the the field when we wenr out in the afternoon.
All the children brought food for the classes, and we had loads of food to eat. When all the classes had arrived and were beginning to eat we saw a fire engine arrive at school. It drove onto the school field and then parked there. Everybody cheered it. Then a police car appeared as well. The police car parked on the playground.
Each class took it in turns to go the fire engine and police car and the children were able to go inside the fire engine and play with the police cars lights and loud siren. Some of the children dressed up in the police jacket and hat.
The firemen showed us the hosepipes as well and switched them on. They went a long way. Some of the children were in the way of the hose and got very wet when it was turned on.
After all the children had been to the fire engine and police car we had a special cake. Our secretary, Mrs. Lee, was asked to cut the cake as she had been the secretary nearly all the time that Southwold has been at this site.
To finish off our birthday party, we had a special balloon race. Lots of people had bought a balloon from school hoping that theirs would fly the furthest when they were all released. After finally deciding which way the wind was blowing the balloons were released into the sky. They all began to fly away and the children chased after them across the playground. We all watched as the balloons got smaller and smaller and when they had gone it was time to go back inside and then go home.
What a special week it was, a week that will be remembered for a long time

HMS Nottingham flies in

When the Lynx helicopter arrived from HMS Nottingham, we asked the children to write some reports about the visit, and thank you letters to send back to HMS Nottingham

It was good in the helicopter and I wore the hat and it was big and heavy and the hat was green and the jacket and the helicopter was grey and it was big and it was bigger than us.

Kyle, (Class 3)
The helicopter landed on the field and a person came into our class and did something on the computer and we went outside and they showed us the helicopter.

Joseph, (Class 3)
Dear Flight Lieutenent, Thank you for coming to our school. I enjoyed being told about the how the helicopter worked. I liked the bit when it landed. It blew us away. I saw it last year but this year was better.

Stephen, (Class 2)
Dear Flight Lieutenent, Thank you for coming to Southwold. We all appreciate it very much. I hope that you had a good time because we did. When you came everyone shouted. Then we got lined up near the grass. Our teacher said that we must be the luckiest school in Nottingham because you have been to our school two times.

Rebecca, (Class 2)
Dear Flight Lieutenent, Thank you for coming to Southwold. I liked the bit where you showed us around the helicopter. I learned a lot from you. Everyone was happy when you came to Southwold. It was noisy when you landed and it blew everyone away. I thought it was funny. I went to HMS Nottingham for the party. It was really exciting at the party, and I fed a pirate some jelly. I would like to come back again.

Suknaam, (Class 2)

Goodbye to Staff

July was a time when lots of people said goodbye to Southwold, not only did we see the Year Six children move on, but we also said goodbye to Mrs. Lee - our secretary for 30 years, Ms. Lear - who left us to spend more time with her new daughter, and Mrs. Preston- McCauley who is expecting her baby anytime now.

At the end of the summer term the children and staff at Southwold said fond farewells to two members of staff at school.
Our secretary, Mrs. Lee, retired after working here for a magnificent 30 years.
Mrs. Lee arrived at Southwold in the September of 1968 - only a few months after the school had opened its doors for the first time, and since then she has been in charge of the school office, filling in the dinner forms, typing out letters, and phoning mums and dads for poorly children. As a leaving present Mrs. Lee received a mantle clock from the school as well as a bouquet of flowers.
Mrs. Lee returned to school recently to present to the children a new school bell.
Ms. Lear also left us at the end of the term after teaching here for quite a while.
Ms. Lear is devoting more of her time to daughter Emily - who we featured in the first issue of Tons Of Fun. Ms. Lear received a garden bird bath with statue from the school as well as a bouquet.
Ms. Lear left us a present as well when she presented the school with a special trophy to be used on special occasions.
We also said a temporary goodbye to Mrs. Preston-McCauley who has left to have her baby. We wish her all the best.
July saw our oldest children leaving Southwold and moving onto new schools. We asked them for some memories of their time at Southwold

To all of the teachers I had a great time.
To all of class 4 I can remember when I was in this class.
To all of class 6 I know I was in your class. I shall remember you.
To all of class 3 I enjoyed being in your class.
To all of class 5 I know I was in your class. I shall remember you.

Stacey
Dear Southwold, I enjoy doing events. We had lots of fun. It had been great going to the disco and having sports. In my memories, Mr. Widdowson had a slimy sloppy gunging. I enjoyed going on trips and seeing HMS Nottingham. I saw a helicopter.

Harpreet
Dear Southwold,, Thank you for helping me with every subject I have had to do. I will remember all the teachers that have taught me like Ms. Low and Mrs. Lear and Mrs. Duncan.
Names of my mates; Mark, Tom, Anthony, Stefan.

Callam Draper
Dear Southwold, Thank you for teaching me all the work you have taught me. I would like to come and visit when I am off school sometime. I will remember the teachers who taught me - especially Ms. Low, Miss. Lear and Mrs. Duncan. Thank you all for organising all the discos and the B.B.Q. I am proud of some of my work I have done since the infants with Mrs. Duncan. Now I am going to another school I will meet new friends but I won’t forget all my old friends. I will see you all another time.
See you soon,

Deanne Stewart
On Tuesday 21st July I will be leaving after nearly eight years. During those I have had a lot of good times. I can remember a few of them ; The leavers barbecue, the week of celebrations, the visit to HMS Nottingham, the helicopter coming to our school.
It seems very strange. I can still remember when I was in the infants, and now I’ve done my S.A.T’s !!
One trip which will always be on my mind is when we went aboard HMS Nottingham. I remember it all. From the moment I stepped on to the moment I stepped off. We had to look for treasure with the pirates. Although my group didn’t find it we had a wonderful time there. But the best time was at Southwold !
Yours Sincerely,

Selina

School News

Since December last year, Southwold Primary has been connected to the Internet - the world wide web - allowing the children opportunities never before dreamt of. With this new technology the children have;
· Sent e-mails to Santa Claus at Christmas asking him if he was busy !!!!
· Used weather services around the world to help make a world-wide weather topic for their class
· Set up an Internet pen pal service, named e-pals
· Begun producing work specifically aimed at being put onto the Internet
To enable the children to publish work on the Internet the school has built an impressive website. This site features information about the school, information about classes, details of school clubs and important events such as the birthday celebrations and the Navy visit. There are also sections created entirely by the children - the Goose Fair by Classes 3 and 4 for example, and the Southwold gallery featuring artwork.
To visit the Southwold Online site, you need to be connected to the Internet, then enter this web address ;

The 30th celebration party balloon race is still being judged, although the last date for balloon slips to be returned is the end of this half term holiday. So far we have had slips returned from as far away as Calverton, and Newark, North Nottinghamshire. Look out for the winner in the next issue.

Congratulations to Jade Giles and Chelsie Johnson, class 3, who have had their work on the history of the Goose Fair selected to be placed on the ‘Kids On The Net’ website. This site is multinational and features work from children all over the world.

We would like to give a big welcome to our new secretary, Mrs. Buzza.
Mrs. Buzza is getting to grips with life at Southwold, and we hope that she will enjoy her time here. We wonder if it will be another 30 years before Southwold has another secretary.

Congratulations to Amy Hills (who has now left us) who reached the finals of the swimming competition the school took part in. Although Amy did not win, she performed brilliantly and was a credit to the school.

Our school sports day was a good fun last summer. We had our groups, some infant and some junior children, and then we began.
We had lots of different activities to try. We had the score a netball goal game, the build a brick wall game, climb along the apparatus, hockey, lots more and orange juice.
Everybody enjoyed it and the weather was nice too.

As most of you are already aware, at the start of the term one of our pupils was involved in a serious accident on the pedestrian crossing on Western Boulevard.
Dwane Brooks, class 3, has suffered two broken legs in the accident and cannot be with us in school at the moment.
Please spare a few moments to write Dwane a letter, or make him a card to help cheer him up, as he cannot go out or play.
We wish Dwane all the best and look forward to seeing him back at school soon.

Parents, can you spare a little bit of time each week to help in school ? We would really appreciate your help with reading tasks during our daily literacy hours.
If you can spare any time, please see your child’s class teacher, or see Mrs. Price.

Beginning after the half term holiday will be another year of gardening club.
Any year 3 children who would like to help make the school look nice next summer need to see their class teacher.
There is space for about twelve children to attend every Monday night for 45 minutes.
Plans this year include planting around the nursery fence, beginning work on the sheltered area, creating a minibeast centre, and improving the area around the willow trees.

Do you remember in the last issue of T.O.F. we asked for any information about the clock that used to sit on top of the old school building, as we wanted to locate it with a view to bringing it to the new building.
Well, we have been informed - by a mystery source !!! - that the clock has gone to be cleaned, polished, and repaired, in order to be returned to its original site and sit outside the new university campus that is currently being built. We look forward to seeing it return to its home.

Classes 6, 5, the Year 2 in class 4, and the nursery went to White Post Farm before the summer holidays. They had a great time. At the farm they fed some sheep and cows. They also saw pigs, bats, owls, dogs, cats, rats, rabbits and llamas.

9am and Classes 2, 3 and the Year 3 in class 4 went to London. It took three hours to get there. We saw the British Museum. Then we went inside the British Museum. We saw mummies and statues in the Museum. Then we went to Hyde Park and had our dinner and we went to play. We went back on the bus and went around London. Then we had to go home. It took us four hours to get back home. We got back at 9pm.
