The making of Pirates Booty

The Interactive Adventure

Made possible by HTML Hyperlinking

Before this adventure got anywhere near to becoming reality it had to go through several stages.

Below we list the stages - in the hope that maybe someone else will make their own hypertext adventure

Stage One
The children in class 3 devised the original shape of the Island. Then they decided what features they would like to see on the Island - maybe a lake, or a river. What about a village ?, etc

Stage Two
The class teacher then drew out the map on a large sheet of sqaured paper and created coordinates for each part of the Island. Each child was then given an area ( a coordinate ) to describe

Stage Three
The children then used their planning sheets to draw out their area. These pictures were then scanned into the computer to be used in the game. (each picture was named after the coordinate to make it easier)

Stage 4
The children then had to enter their description into the computer. This acitivity allowed the class teacher to monitor the childrens ICT skills (loading, saving, editing, use of the mouse and keyboard etc, and has helped with the ICT assessment for the term)

Stage 5
The childrens writing was Cut and Pasted into a web page template, and the picture added. Again the webpage was named after the original coordinates

Stage 6
A flow chart was then drawn to show how each part of the Island was linked to the next. Each area was then Hyperlinked to the next.

Stage 7
The class teacher removed a few links from some pages (making it tricky to get around the Island) and added a few traps for any adventurers to get stuck in

Stage 8
Small sound effects were added to give the adventure the finishing touches before it was almost ready

Stage 9
The pages were uploaded onto the Internet - but no link was put to them. This allowed class 3 to test out the adventure and make sure that it worked properly before it went 'live'

Stage 10
Once the adventure had passed Class 3 approval, the link was added and the adventure became available to everybody on the Internet.

Curriculum Areas Covered
English - Writing / use of language. Selecting appropiate adjectives.

Maths - We used coordinates work when planning out the map

Geography - We revised directions using a compass (also maths). Map skills. Geographical details

History - We looked at the type of ships that would have been used by pirates

R.E. - We looked at Inca temples and Island statues for Ideas

Technology - We planned out and designed a flowchart linking all the locations together

I.C.T - erm.... obvious really. Entering text, cutting and pasting, use of the Internet, Hyperlinking

This project also covered, and infact went further than required by, the DfEE / QCA curriculum guides for ICT in the strand of using a simulation with choices and consequences

Hypertext links

This is a way of linking one page to another. When you see a hypertext link it appears in a colour (normally blue). If you move your mouse onto the coloured writing, the pointer will become a hand. Click and you will be taken to the next link.

Below you can see two examples of hyperlinking
