Jesse Boot – founder of Boots the Chemists

Jesse boot was born 1850. Jesse and his family lived in Hockley. John boot, his father, opened a shop on Goose Gate. Remedies that they sold were made from plants. Jesse was 13 when he left school.

Jesse Boot became a partner when he was 21. Customers could get to the first floor of the shop by a new lift. The first store built out of Nottingham was in Sheffield.

Jesse met Florence Row on the Island of Jersey. The shop on Pelham Street had new lights running on electricity. The Boots factory moved to Island Street because they needed a larger factory.

Jesse and Florence rewarded their workers by giving them trips and visits. Jesse became Sir Jesse Boot because of his hard work.

Boots the Chemists was sold for £2 1/4 million and it was sold in 1920.

Jesse then helped Nottingham University by giving them £50, 000. The Island street factories later moved to Beeston. The 1, 000th boots store was opened in Scotland.

In 1931 Sir Jesse died.

Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean – Ice Dancers

Jayne Torvill was born in 1957. Christopher Dean was born in 1958.

Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean lived in Nottingham.

Christopher Dean's job before he was an ice skater was a policeman.

Torvill and Dean were British Champions six times.

Torvill and Dean won a Gold medal in the Olympics in 1984. They skated to the music of Bolero.

The maximum score in the Olympics was 6.0. All nine judges gave Torvill and Dean 6.0.

Torvill and Dean were world champions in 1981 and 1982 and 1983 and 1984.

After all the Olympics, Torvill and Dean performed ice dance shows all around the world.
