The 1920'sWe start with the 1920's, known as the roaring twenties. A time when stocks and shares are booming !!!American women get the vote. Prohibiton doesn't stop people enjoying themselves. It's spend spend spend. People enjoyed the Radio, gramaphone and going to the movies. Jazz at the cotton club was a big hit. Sport and holidays were very popular. But the roaring twenties ending with disaster as the stock market crashes, banks go bust and thousands of people lose their jobs and their life savings. | ![]() |
The 1930'sThe great depression lasted well into the 1930's. After four years 14 million British people were out of work.While many went on hunger marches like the Jarrow March, others enjoyed Hollywood movies, cruises on the Queen Elizabeth and a rich lifestyle. In Germany Hitler became Chancellor. His Nazi party began to gain support. By 1939 people began to realise that they would see war for the second time in their lives, and so the 40's began. | ![]() |
The 1940'sWith the start of war, many young people were called up to fight for their country.As they waited at the station, saying goodbye to their loved ones, they wondered if they would see them again. Bombs fell in the cities, and so a mass evacuation of children to the countryside took place. With just a suitcase and a label the children said goodbye. At the end of the war, the children came back home, the soldiers returned and Britain danced to the Big Band Sound | ![]() |
The 1950'sThe 1950's was a time for everyone to look forward to better things since the years of war. Many new houses were built and the National Health Service began.Britains Prime Minister, Harold MacMillan, famously said "You've never had it so good". The biggest invention of the decade was television. Many people bought a set to watch the coronation of Princess Elizabeth as she became Queen Elizabeth II. For the younger generation came something new and exciting that the parents did not like -'Rock and Roll' with stars such as Bill Haley, Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley. | ![]() |
The 1960'sThe swinging 60's saw the first man ever to be sent into space to orbit the Earth. He was Yuri Gargarin.England won the World Cup, beating Germany 4-2. The 1960's was also a troubled time. War in Vietnam caused many protests with people calling for peace, and in 1963 American President John F Kennedy was killed. In 1969 Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon. The 1970'sThe 1970's was a time of glitter and glamour. Disco fever and glam rock hit the nation with groups such as The Osmonds, Queen, Slade, The BeeGees, David Bowie and of course ABBA.Fashions became more outrageous - flared trousers, big collars, wild hats, hot pants and platform boots were the rage. The blockbuster movie of the 70's was Jaws - the horror movie with the man eating shark. The 1970's also saw the death of Elvis Presley. Star Wars broke box office records, and in 1977 the nation celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Queens reign with street parties. | ![]() |
The 1980'sThe 1980's saw the wedding of the century when Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer. The wedding was watched worldwide by an audience of around 750 million people.It was also the decade of the Falklands and Gulf wars. Music came from the likes of Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Culture Club and Dexy's Midnight runners. Pop stars united to feed the world as Band Aid.
