The Solar System

The Sun by Jade

The sun is a gaseous mass of hydrogen and helium. The sun rotates, but takes longer to rotate at the poles than it does at its equator. The suns day is equivalent to 26 earth days at its equator.
*93 million miles away from us
* 866,000 miles wide
*6,000 degrees celcius
*About 4,600 million years old

DID YOU SEE THE TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE SUN THIS SUMMER ?

We have an account and picture of the eclipse of August 11th.
Find it on the eclipse page

Mercury by Esther

If I was on Mercury I would be scared because I would feel alone
*Crater Scared Surface
*Huge Iron Core
*Second Smallest Planet
*Closet to the Sun

Venus by Joseph

Venus is the second planet from the sun. Venus is the brightest planet in the sky. Venus is about the same size as the Earth and does have an atmosphere, but it is not the sort of atmosphere we humans need for breathing. It is mostly a gas called Carbon Dioxide
If I were living on Venus I would not like it.
*Same size as Earth
*Covered with clouds
*Volcanic Surface
*Hottest of planets

Earth by Ashley

Earth is the third planet from the sun. It is the only planet with life (as we know) on it.
The Earths atmosphere is made up of nitrogen and oxygen.
THe average temperature on Earth is 15 degrees.
The length of one year is 365 days.
The Earth has one moon.
*Core of Solid Iron
*75% of surface is water
*Ever changing surface

Mars by Sharna

In July 1997 spacecraft Pathfinder landed on Mars. Its fall was cushioned by large aribags rather like giant balloons. A T.V. camera carried on the craft took pictures. of its landing place. A small rover named 'Sojourner (after a famous astronomer) was on board pathfinder. Controllers on Earth moved Sojourner slowly around the planets surface near the lander. It carried instruments to study the rocks.
*Red surface soil
*Often stormy
*Polar Ice Caps
*Giant Volcanoes

Jupiter by Joseph

Jupiter is the fifth planet from the sun. It is the largest planet in the solar system.
It appears very bright to the naked eye and outshines everything in the sky except the sun and moon.
If I were living on Jupiter I would not like it because I would miss home.
*Biggest PLanet
*Thin Ring System
*Giant Gas PLanet
*Shortest day

Saturn by Rhys

Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun.
Saturn is visible to the naked eye.
Saturn has the most moons.
Saturns rings are extremely wide bu thin. There are more than 100,000 seperate ringlets.
If I was living on Saturn I would enjoy having the planet all to myself.
*Wide System of bright rings
*Rings made of millions of ice covered rocks and dust particles
*Most moons
*Hurricane winds

Uranus by Jade

Uranus is visible to the naked eye. It is the seventh planet from the sun.
If I were living on Uranus it would be lonely.
*Thin ring system
*Orbits the sun on its side
*Most featureless planet
*Summer lasts 42 years

Neptune by Esther

Neptune is the fourth largest planet.
Neptune is a dark blue planet.
It is round and big.
Neptune has eight moons.
If I lived on Neptune I would be very cold because I would be far away from the sun.
*Winds race over the surface
*Methane atmosphere
*Ring system
*Bluest Planet

Pluto by Jade

Pluto is the most distant planet from the sun yet discovered.
It was first spotted in 1929.
Pluto is the only planet not visited by a space probe.
Pluto has an irregular orbit and only one moon
If I lived on Pluto I would be very bored because I would be the only living person there.
*Frozen ,dead world
*Smallest Planet
*Only planet not yet visit by a space probe
*Irregular orbit
