A target is marked on the ground with a brightly coloured
12" square flag at the centre. The flag is placed as close
to the ground as possible. The radius of each circle of the
target is: 18", 3ft., 6ft., 9ft. and 12ft., scoring 5, 4, 3,
2, and 1 respectively.
Shooting may be one-way or two-way.
A Round is 36 arrows.
Shooting distances: Gentlemen - 180 yds., Ladies - 140 yds.
In Traditional Two-way Clout Shoots the rules are as above,
but the flag is replaced by the clout: nowadays a target face
some 30" in diameter, angled at forty-five degrees and
resting on the ground. The face is white with a 4" diameter
spot at the centre. Obviously, ends are shot in alternative
directions.
Clout shooting, it is alleged, comes from the practice of
showering the enemy with arrows in battle. The Society for
Creative Anachronism has taken this idea and developed a version
of the clout:
The target is 100yds from the shooting line. It is a circle
of straw bales 30ft in diameter, 3 bales high and crenellated
like a castle. The idea being to represent the tower of a castle.
Three cardboard cutouts representing soldiers are used: one
at the centre of the tower and the other two about 4yds outside
the tower, one nearer and one further away than 100yds from the
shooting line (but within 5yds of it). The 'men' are also fitted
with shields, armour and a flag (for wind direction and strength
indication).
Round: 6 untimed arrows per archer. Two teams competing makes
this a war!
Scoring:
1pts for hitting the tower wall - top or inside back wall
only.
1pts for arrow hitting inside man's armour.
2pts for arrow hitting inside man.
3pts for arrow hitting an outside man.
0pts for arrow hitting an outside man's armour.
