Andy Goldsworthy:

Focus week May 2001

Bark spirals. These were our only permanent works. All the others would decay or be destroyed. The biggest bark spiral is now on display in our covered way.

Immediately after our 2001 SATs, we spent a focus week investigating the environment. As part of this, some classes carried out work about the artist Andy Goldsworthy.

Andy Goldsworthy is a British artist who uses nature and the environment to produce fascinating and intricate works of art. You can read more about him here.

During the course of the week, we produced our own artwork inspired by Andy Goldsworthy's ideas.

We made collages of torn leaves. We constructed bark spirals on the playground, and spirals of lilac petals on the field. We took over the courtyard, and used found materials to develop sculptures that would decay. The weather was bright and sunny, so we also made use of the changing shadows.

We used three themes: wood, stone and time. These are the themes of three of Andy Goldsworthy's books. We thought about the properties of natural materials, and also about the way things naturally change over time.

Andy Goldsworthy takes photographs of all his work, so we took photos of ours!
