Photographs of Mali. Please e-mail us and tell us what you think of our photographs! © 1999 Peter Moore and Sprites Junior School Ipswich. ZIP files 1. What are ZIP files? Zip files are a way of downloading lots of information at once. You will receive the file in a compressed form, and will need to 'unzip' it. This can be done quite simply with a program like Winzip, an evaluation version of which is freely available from the internet if you do not have a copy already. Click here for a copy of Winzip. 2. Information about the ZIP files of Mali photographs. The complete photographs of Mali take up about eight and a half megabytes. This should not be a problem for any computer bought in the last 4 or 5 years, but older computers may not have sufficient space. There is also the question of the size of your modem. If you have bought your computer in the last year or so, it will probably have a 56kbps modem, or you may be using an ISDN line at school. You may also be using a file-download manager. These are fast and reliable ways of downloading information. The complete photographs should take you between 10 and 20 minutes to download in this form. If you have an older computer, with a slower modem (perhaps 14kbps or 28kbps) then you may find downloading a very large zipfile like this is a problem. It will be very slow, and there is a possibility of data being interrupted. If you have a computer older than two years, and you have not bought a new modem, we would suggest that you choose to download the smaller, themed zip files one at a time rather than the whole lot in one go. See below for more details. If your computer is older than 4 years, and you have not replaced the modem, then we would suggest that you return to the main Mali index and download photographs one at a time. 3. Downloading ZIP files of the Mali photographs. If you download a ZIP file, it will be automatically stored on your computer. We suggest that you download the zipfile to your desktop, so that it is easily found. If you have installed Winzip, or another suitable ZIP file handler, then simply clicking on the desktop icon for the ZIP file will unzip it and save all the photographs onto your computer. We suggest that you create a special folder to keep all the photographs in, or, if you are not sure how to do this, select 'My Documents' as the place you want them to be placed when they've been unzipped. They can then be easily accessed from a graphics package. We would recommend using MGI Photosuite, or similar, to view them as a slideshow.
