Sir Roger Manwood's School
SPORT
The
major winter sports for boys are rugby and hockey, which are played for one
term each, and soccer which is played throughout the season. Hockey matches are
held at a local club where there are top-class artificial surfaces, and there
are two rugby pitches and one soccer pitch on the School's extensive campus.
Girls play hockey as their
principal sport in the Autumn term and netball in the Spring term. The School’s
own facilities include an artificial pitch and two hockey pitches. Hockey in
particular has enjoyed great success in recent years, and the School has
recently produced two junior international players, one of whom has gone on to
represent Great Britain at senior level and competed at the recent Sydney
Olympics.

In the Summer Term cricket,
tennis and athletics are the major sports.
In addition to the main sports,
cross-country running, basketball, golf, trampolining, aerobics, gymnastics,
rounders, fencing, karate and swimming are offered.
Every year a number of pupils gain
representative honours at area, county, and national level in a wide variety of
sports. The School is very conscious of the value of physical fitness and the
personal development achievable through sport, whether in team games or in
individual competition. Our ability to achieve this has been greatly enhanced
by the refurbishment of the gymnasium and the addition of a large Sports Hall,
both of which were completed in the spring of 1999.
