Past Achievements

of St Combs School

In Dec 1995 Her Majesty’s Inspectors visited our school. As you can see we did very well. Here is a copy of the report, which was later published in the Sunday Times printed here by kind permission.

Over the years the school has had a remarkable history of achievements in the areas of music, drama and PE. Below are just a few of the many escapades we have had over the years!

Drama and Recitation

The staff and pupils in St Combs have always been interested in our ‘Mither Tongue’ – the Doric. We have written and performed a few over the years, which we entered into the New Pitsligo Drama Festival. This in turn was part of The Buchan Heritage Festival which is still ongoing, and in which we still participate today. Over the years the children did exceptionally well in plays such as ‘The Doctors Surgery’ ‘Jeans New Hat’ ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ ‘The Queens Visit’ and ‘Sna Fite’ However the schools greatest success in this field was in the production of ‘The Three Little Pigs’. This was written and produced by Mrs N Buchan and Mrs A Mutch and performed by Primary 1-4.

We were invited to attend the Aberdeen International Youth Festival and we actually performed in His Majesty’s Theatre. It was really an experience for all concerned! Prior to the show we were invited to take part in the launch of the festival. We took part in the parade down Union Street and mingled with participants from all over the world.

We have been keen supporters of the Buchan Heritage Doric Poetry Competition and the children have won many prizes both for recitation and Doric Poetry writing over a number of years.

Christmas Concerts

The month of December sees the school in turmoil with rehearsals taking place for our school concert. Everyone provides something towards a Christmas Play or Musical Sketch to incorporate into a Concert.

In the past we have been more adventurous and staged pantomimes such as ‘Cinderella’ and ‘The Wizard of Oz 2 ½’. They were great fun to produce but a LOT of hard work too.

St Combs School Choir

The choir has entertained many different audiences over the years. We have been invited to Church Guilds, Arthritis Clubs, Fishermen’s Mission, Old Folks Homes, Gala Events, Songs of Praise and these are but a few.

We have taken part many times in The Aberdeen Music Festival always performing well and even winning on occasion.

One Christmas, the choir won North Sound Radio’s Song For Christmas. It was organised as part of Aberdeen City Winter Festival. The choir sang ‘If they gave us peace for Christmas’ and the school benefited by winning a superb Keyboard. We were thrilled to travel to Aberdeen to perform our song on a moonlit frosty upper deck of the St Nicholas Centre under a very well lit tree. It was a magical evening.

Musicals

We have produced (on our more energetic and idiotic) moments a few very successful musicals. These have included ‘The Last Flower On Earth’ and ‘Carrots’. We were very proud of these Musicals and the children did us proud every time. Their enthusiasm and singing made the very hairs on the back of your neck stand up!

We were particularly proud of ‘Carrots’ and such was the enthusiasm of the children they all dutifully attended evening and weekend rehearsals. The children staged a superb show and displayed both their expertise on stage and their musical talents.

Sport

Over the years we have taken part in many sporting activities such as netball, football, Cross Country and Potted Sport Competitions.

The Football Team

The football team enjoy taking part in the Buchan Rural League. They have been runners up in this league but have never actually won it. Mr Watt and Mr Smith coach them.

The Netball team

The netball team are always very enthusiastic. They play in The Buchan League and have won the League Cup. They also take part in The Crimond Inter School Sports and have won the cup on many occasions, as well as being runners up several times. The team enjoy taking part in the St Combs Gala where they have also been winners and runners up.

Cross Country

Several of our pupils enjoy taking part in Cross Country, which is usually held at Aden Park. They always try very hard and usually manage to finish the course. Sometimes we have runners coming in the top six which is really good considering the amount of entries.

Potted Sports

On many occasions we have gone to Crimond Gala and Westfield Gala to take part in Potted Sports and we have been very lucky to win medals there too.
